  God's promise to king David
God elaborated on His promise to all mankind (as made to Adam & Eve and Abraham) through David, a king of Israel. The entire promise is recorded in 2 Sam 7:12-16.

The promise is that God will set up a descendant of David, to sit on his throne, who would reign forever (v13).
This descendant would be unique in that God would be his father (v14).
Moreover, David would be there to see it, and he too would live forever (v16).

When will Jesus sit on David's throne?
We know that Jesus was a son of David through his mother Mary (matt), and he is also God's Son ().

But When will Jesus sit on David's throne forever, and how will David be there to see it?

Well David knew this was a promise that would take place a great while in the future. He says God had spoken of a "great while to come" (v19).

The Answer lies in the fact that Jesus is to rule as king in God's Kingdom.
This kingdom will be set up on earth at some time in the future when Christ returns (Acts 1:9-11; 2 Tim 4:1).

  How will David see it?

David is promised a place in God's kingdom.

The simple fact is that he will be raised from the dead (Nothing is impossible with God).
This raising from the dead - or 'resurrection' will take place before God's Kingdom is established in the earth.

We are also promised a place in God's Kingdom, if we follow his commands (John 5:28-29; Dan 12:1-3) and take on the name of His son ().

How does this involve us ?
The exciting thing for you and I, is that if we believe and obey we can be saved (Mark 16:16).
We can be saved from death () and saved from ourselves - we will be changed.
Our daily struggles will be over, we can live and reign with Christ in God's Kingdom. (2 Tim 2:11-12 ?).
